AI Copyright Showdown and Insider Betting Scandal

This week’s stories highlight two fast-moving legal fronts in entertainment. The Motion Picture Association is escalating its fight against ByteDance’s AI video generator, alleging systemic copyright infringement. Meanwhile, an editor for MrBeast has been accused of insider trading on a prediction market platform, raising new concerns about regulation in digital media.

Hi there,

Hollywood is turning up the pressure on generative AI.

The Motion Picture Association has sent a formal cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance over its Seedance 2.0 video tool, arguing that copyright infringement isn’t accidental — it’s built into the system. Studios say the platform generates unauthorized versions of their characters and films at scale.

At the same time, the rise of prediction markets in entertainment has hit a legal snag. An editor for MrBeast has been referred to federal regulators after allegedly using nonpublic information to make profitable bets on Kalshi.

MPA sends cease and desist to ByteDance over Seedance 2.0

The Motion Picture Association has issued a strongly worded cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance, alleging that its Seedance 2.0 AI video generator engages in “systemic infringement.” According to the MPA, the tool produces videos featuring characters and likenesses from major Hollywood properties, including Spider-Man and Transformers, without authorization. The letter argues that infringement is not incidental but inherent to the platform’s design.

Studios including Disney, Warner Bros., Netflix, Paramount, and Sony have also sent legal threats. While ByteDance has pledged to strengthen safeguards, the MPA says public assurances are insufficient. The organization claims the model was trained on copyrighted works without consent and released without proper guardrails. The dispute could become a landmark test of how aggressively Hollywood challenges generative AI platforms.

MrBeast editor accused of insider trading on Kalshi

Kalshi has referred an editor for MrBeast to federal regulators after discovering what it described as statistically improbable trading activity. The employee allegedly used access to nonpublic production information to place roughly $4,000 in bets related to upcoming MrBeast videos, achieving near-perfect results on low-probability markets.

The case is significant because prediction markets are increasingly intersecting with entertainment. As platforms experiment with live odds and interactive wagering tied to cultural events, questions about insider trading and information asymmetry are surfacing. Kalshi fined the employee over $20,000 and suspended him, while the matter has been reported to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
